Published Date Author: , January 13th, 2010

Early this morning a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti and details are still coming in. mGive is working with Red Cross and we ask you to help now with an immediate donation made from your mobile phone. Simply text the word HAITI to 90999 to give $10. When prompted, reply with YES to confirm your one-time gift. The $10 donation will appear on your next mobile bill and 100% of the donation will go to Red Cross to help those hit by this natural disaster. Receipts can be printed at mGive.org/receipt.

Now what?

www.mgive.com Angela Whaley said on January 13, 2010, 4:15 pm:

Valerie, double check the number you sent the text message to because it should be 90999. Simply text the word HAITI to the number 90999. You’ll get a text back asking you to confirm with the word YES. Reply to that message with the word YES and a one-time $10 donation will be added to your phone bill that will go to the Red Cross IN FULL. Contact us if you still have questions or issues. You can also visit mGive.com/Haiti for FAQs.

My carrier is Cellular South. They said they were setup to allow donations to the Red Cross Haiti efforts and to send the word Haiti to 90999. I did. I got a reply back from 90999 saying my carrier was not participating in this campaign. So I called my carrier, Cellular South, to verify. They said yes they were and they could see the charge now on my account. So I came here to get a receipt. I keyed in my phone number and then the PIN that was texted to me. It told me “No donations found for this mobile number”. So where is my donation? Cellular South shows it on my account but your web site shows no donations for my number.

How quickly will the Red Cross get the money? I’ve heard time frames of 30 & 60 days at least for mGive to actually get the money to the Red Cross. I’ve also heard that while mGive gives all the money collected to the charity involved, they then turn around & charge the charity some amount for the collection campaign. Can you clarify? Or point me to a web page that explains? Thank you. I’d love to post this info on Facebook, etc., but want to know what I’m supporting.

Valerie, 90999 is only for AT&T users.
Cellphone users can send donations of $5 by texting the word “Haiti” to 45678 through a system set up by the Mobile Giving Foundation, a group that enables charities to collect money by text messages. The Salvation Army is a member of the group.
The first tweet came through just two hours after a massive earthquake devastated Haiti’s capital early Tuesday evening: “Please text ‘Yele’ to 501501 to donate $5 to YELE HAITI. Your money will help with relief efforts. They need our help.” Sent from the Twitter account of Haitian born musician Wyclef Jean, the text message went out to the singer’s nearly 1.4 million followers and kicked off what has quickly become the largest text-based fundraising campaign for disaster relief in history. An American Red Cross text donation campaign, which was launched a couple hours after Yéle Haiti’s, had raised over $800,000 by 3pm Wednesday.

If I call Red Cross directly and specify their Haiti fund the Red Cross will get my $10 debit donation in about one day.

Please clarify how many days it takes mGive to get the donation to the Red Cross Haiti fund, as I might like to share mGive’s Haiti donation service with friends and family, but not if it takes 90 days.

Thank you in advance for your prompt response.

I thought that the donations are charged to your phone bill or is that with just certain phone providers?

Either way it is good to still be able to donate from online which also should give the option to increase or decrease one’s donation.

I also wonder if there is a difference with when the donations are given to Haiti given which site you use to give your donation. Meaning from this site or the actual Red Cross site.? Thank you!

Cathy – Yes, it typically takes about 90 days for the charity to get the funds although in this case we are looking for ways to speed that up. Also, mGive has agreed to waive all fees for the Red Cross Haiti Relief campaign so 100% of your donation will go to the Red Cross. Please post it on Facebook, we would greatly appreciate it!

RE: VIRGIN MOBILE
I called customer service yesterday. The “live advisor” was not aware a disaster in Haiti had taken place. I was told since my call was not related to my account, a supervisor would not speak with me. After 15 minutes and much persistence, a supervisor took my call. She was also unaware of the devestating earthquake in Haiti and did not seem to care. I was asked if I had a problem with my acct she could take care of otherwise we needed to end the call. They were not aware of “any such program being offered by Virgin Mobile”.

I would say DO NOT USE VIRGIN MOBILE TO DONATE TO THE HAITI FUND!!!!

Is this some kind of scam? Is all the money going to go to the poor people of Haiti. I saw a show on Fox that said Haiti has received over 3 billion in aid since 1992 and most of the money does NOT reach the people. It goes to crooked government officials and thugs. Its hard to justify donating when you believe the money will not be used for what it is intended. I also do NOT trust the Red Cross. Ask any WWII Vet and you will know what I mean!!!

Virgin Mobile is now accepting and allowing text donations.
I just made 2 donations and the amounts took about 10-15 minutes to deduct from my balance. My prayers go out to all the victims of the Haiti earthquake and their families

This is what is on their site.
Text2Donate to Haiti

Virgin Mobile USA wants you to know that there are several ways you can contribute to the earthquake relief efforts for Haiti.

The following Text to Donate shortcodes work on Virgin Mobile phones:

* Text “YELE” to 501501 to donate $5
to Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti organization and contribute to the relief effort.

* Text “HAITI” to 90999 to donate $10
thru the American Red Cross to contribute to the relief effort.

* Text the word “Haiti” to 85944 to donate $5
On behalf of the Union Rescue Mission in cooperation with the International Medical Corps.

Standard messaging fees do not apply for the above shortcodes when making a donation to help Haiti.

What a scam!

The Red Cross skims from the top of the donations money to pay for their executives and services first, before they give to the needy, and what is left is what the needy get.

The cell # donation will take several weeks before they are handled, if not several months. As well, the Mobile company will NOT advancedd any money from the costs, you MUSt may your bill first.

So, don’t be so lqujick to donate this way. Go a surer way.

What the heck is that about ? and what the heck kind of place am i sending money for a mostly catholic Country, and im sending this from THE USA that you dont reconize the word God!!!! I probly just wasted my money and it went to some Muslim loving liberal and hatti wont get nothing!! I wish i could take this fee off, because i bet the people wont even get a dime of it!!! but i am showing this Message you sent to the Media!!!

Lori - Gravatar

www.mgive.com Lori said on January 22, 2010, 5:10 pm:

Krissy – You misunderstood what the message was telling you. Users can’t just send any text message they want to 90999. Unless you send the correct keyword (in this case, HAITI), you will get a message back saying the keyword is not recognized. Base on the message you sent, the system looks at the first word of your message (God) and determines if that is a keyword for any current donation campaigns. It is not, and thus you got the message back God is not a recognized keyword.

So because you did not send the correct keyword (HAITI), you did not actually make a donation. If you want to try again, please text HAITI to 90999 and you will get a confirmation message to which you will need to reply YES to confirm your donation.

Thank you and sorry for the confusion. Feel free to email me if you have futher questions – lhunter@mgive.com.
