Telethons have always been an integral part of many organizations’ fundraising strategies and over the past few years some organizations have begun to offer mobile giving as a donation option in addition to calling in or giving online. mGive has helped to power mobile giving for several telethons, including EIF’s Stand Up To Cancer event, Comedy Central’s Night of Too Many Stars, and Armenia Fund’s 2010 telethon. This weekend we will add two more to the list.
The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA), a leading national nonprofit organization, is seeking to raise the awareness for Alzheimer’s disease to an unprecedented level by holding the nation’s first Alzheimer’s disease telethon on December 4. The star-studded show is designed to entertain and educate viewers, heighten awareness of the urgency of care and cure, and raise funds to meet the needs of the growing number of people with the brain disorder, especially as the first wave of baby boomers turning 65 next year.
AFA’s “Together for Care” telethon will air on local NBC stations in 16 major markets and be telecast online on AFA’s Web site, www.alzfdn.org, for national viewing. Hosted by Al Roker of the TODAY show, the telethon rallies leading celebrities and media personalities around the cause to offer information and hope to families nationwide. AFA is encouraging viewers to both reach out for help and to donate, including donating $10 by texting AFA to 50555, or making a contribution online or by phone.
Fundacion Teleton MexAmerica’s annual telethon will also be held December 3-4. Founded in 2002 as the U.S. branch of an event conducted annually in Mexico since 1997, it is a foundation that respects and safeguards the dignity of the people and seeks to serve children with disabilities providing comprehensive rehabilitation to promote their full development and integration into society. With its 15 Rehabilitation Centers and its Institute of Higher Education in Rehabilitation (ITESUR by its Spanish acronym) Teleton offers Mexico the world’s largest private system for children’s rehabilitation, with a capacity for more than 70,000 patients, under the slogan: “Love and science in the service of life.”
This will be the third year in which Teleton MexAmerica will include a mobile donation component. Viewers will be asked to text TELETON to 90999 to make a $10 donation through their mobile phone.
