March 18th, 2011: March is Music in Our Schools Month and with 13 days left in the month, there is still plenty of time to support music programs for today’s youth. The National Association for Music Education explains that state and local legislators are attempting to make up for funding shortfalls in this difficult economy by cutting education budgets, which places school music at risk. Appreciation for music in our schools began in 1973 and in 1985 it went from an advocacy week to an advocacy month. Each year a theme is chosen and this year’s theme is “Music Lasts a Lifetime.”
A plethora of the most recognized and praised celebrity musicians endorse the importance of music programs in school curriculum and even more specifically Music in Our Schools Month. Many of these artists have even created PSA’s to show their support and examples of these can be found on the 2011 MIOSM website. Hearing their stories of how music contributed to their success is extremely compelling.
