It has been a humbling experience to be reminded that a tragic disaster can happen anywhere.
As you may or may not know, mGive is located near downtown Denver, Colorado. Colorado has had a difficult few months and it has been well documented through national media. Work colleagues, friends and family of our employees have all been affected by the wild fires sweeping our state. Even more recently, our Program Manager woke up to multiple panicked text messages and calls following the Aurora theater shooting. We all knew he was going to the movies that night because he left early the day before and we all knew he lived close to the theater where the shooting occurred. We were lucky – turns out he wasn’t at that theater, but it still hit too close to home. Yes, it has been a humbling experience to be reminded that a disaster can happen anywhere, affecting everyone around you in ways you may never know or fully understand.
While these events have been terrible and all over the news, it has been personally enlightening to remember that I am here at mGive to power social good in a way that has never been done before. Everyone here at mGive and Mobile Accord has the opportunity to influence how we can respond to disaster situations, personally and collectively as a community – whether that means locally, nationally or internationally.
My mom used to say “there will always be someone better off than you, but there will always be someone worse.” She’s right. As we approach the weekend, remember to be kind. Make a difference. Give someone a compliment and mean it. Smile. Make a $10 mobile donation. Share. In the words of Steve Jobs, do so “Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
This is why we do what we do at mGive. We know we can make a difference, and we have…one text message at a time. Even better is the fact we can empower other people to make a difference as well. Please consider making a mobile donation today towards the Aurora theater shooting victims or Colorado wild fire victims. If these causes don’t personally speak to you, we power a number of nonprofit mobile campaigns that you can get behind and I’m personally happy to help you engage with one of them.
I have been with mGive for four years next month and have had the pleasure of working with a variety of amazing nonprofit clients. mGive is not only about disasters. I take pride in the fact that we are helping many organizations share their message through mobile to power social good. There is so much good in the world and we help share it. It makes me proud to be making a difference and to be able to share that experience with you.
